This internship has been great! I was so surprised by the internship in general because I had no idea what to expect. Going into this internship I had no idea what lawyers really even did outside of going to court and turns out that they do quite a lot. I was surprised by how not boring filing papers can be. I didn't think I would enjoy being in a file room by myself pulling out folders and putting more paper in them, but I did. I also didn't think that I would enjoy sitting at a mediation for 11 hours but I did, even though it did get a little bit mind numbing. Overall this internship has been great and I am sad to be leaving.
I contributed to my internship site by 1) Building a brief bank that contains 50 different types of pleadings 2) Taking time to do some of the smaller tasks to free up the time for the extremely busy people here 3) Doing the filing that was getting way out of control. All of those things helped them along with the small tasks like getting the mail and depositing checks. All of that to help them, and it was great because all of it had meaning because I was assisting someone else with their day.
I don't think I can say that this internship was different from what I expected because I didn't really enter it with any expectations other than the fact that some of the work might be pretty mundane. Some of the work was mundane but that doesn't mean it was boring or useless, it just means that it isn't flashy TV show lawyer stuff. That is just not what law is like. Everything you do is building the stage for the exciting things about law, like going to court. If you build the stage incorrectly the exciting things may not be that much fun for you.
During my internship I did run into some challenges. One of the reasons I am here today is to spend more time on my LINK project. This project has been quite a challenge. Although it seems like it would be quite easy it has been time consuming and difficult for the mind. I spend a lot of time reading documents and putting them in formats that the attorney's will be able to use later so that they don't have to reinvent the wheel every time they need a pleading. I accomplished way more here than I thought I would though. Getting there filing done was something that was completely unexpected. You should have seen the filing folder, it was nuts how much paper was in that thing. Also getting as much done as I have on the brief bank has been one thing that I am really proud of. It may not be the prettiest piece of work but it gets the job done and I am proud of that.
I learned a lot about the general functions of a lawyer. I also had the wonderful experience of going to an 11 hour multi million dollar mediation. That was an eye opener for me and what attorney's do. I was really impressed with the patience and the negotiating skills that were used and how useful that can be in a stressful situation like the one that our clients were in. It was extremely interesting and I took four pages of notes throughout the whole day. The best part of that whole experience was when the two separate groups came together and made a final decisions and both were happy with the final agreement. That is what that mediation was all about and it really made me realize that law is not all yes and no.
I learned a ton about the pleadings that lawyers use through the brief bank. This was because in order to build the brief bank I had to read at least one pleading from each different type. So that means that I read at least 50 different types of pleadings. I now have an idea of what some of the pleadings mean and what they do and I also have a great understanding of the language that attorney's use compared to the language of a high school student or just the general public.
Well all it has done is made me realize that if I really want to do something in my life I can work for it and I can probably get there. That is what all the attorney's at GRNM Law have done, so I can do it too. It has also made me realize how valuable internships are because they open so many doors for later on in life. In this specific case I will be continuing to do work with GRNM Law over the summer and I am extremely excited to do that.
Overall this has just been a great three weeks and they have gone so fast. It is going to be hard to go back to school. Especially the Monday through Friday schedule. Getting Thursdays off has been so great. This has been a great experience and I am grateful to GRNM Law for giving me the chance to intern with them.
