Well week number 2 is coming to a close and here I am sitting in front of my computer writing another reflection. It has been a great week and it has gone by so fast. I had some teachers come and visit me earlier in the week and I had forgotten what day it was. I still thought it was Monday! Maybe I just didn't want it to end.
Throughout this past week I watered plants, got the mail, deposited checks, did mini research projects, continued to build a brief bank, filed papers, and cleaned up the office file room. I have been busy the whole time and I actually forgot that I had to write this reflection until a couple of minutes ago. All of the tasks that I have done are little, and some would say boring, but I enjoy it because I know that I am helping everybody here in one little way or another. Freeing up some time from these extremely busy people has to be very helpful and I think everyone here appreciates it.
A new skill that I learned? I don't know that I learned knew skills but I learned knew things. I mean, come on, watering plants is not a knew skill. I learned a lot about the importance of keeping everything on record. Especially in a law firm where forgetting to do something can cause havoc for a day or even multiple days. I also learned a lot about different pleadings that the attorney's will use in both Civil and Criminal cases. This was because of the brief bank that I am building. I get to read about Stipulation's to Dismiss all the way to Subpoena Duces Tecum. It really has been a pretty eye opening experience even if I can't always remember what everything means. There is a lot of new vocabulary that I need to familiarize myself with in a very short period of time.
I encountered some challenges this week. The brief bank seems like such an easy job but it has turned into quite a project. It has been a struggle to go through hundreds of files a day and read them and then decide whether or not it is a good one to use a template for other pleadings of the same type. It is hard on the mind to do that for 4-5 hours a day.
I did make a mistake. While building the brief bank I often times I will read a document and then copy what was in the document into a new Word document so that I can edit it into the format that I would like. I did not check to make sure I was on the new document and I started editing away on this document and, worst of all, I saved it. Thankfully the pleading was from a very old case. I realized my error, almost freaked out, and then I remembered the command "command Z" I simply reverted the document to its original state and clicked save. All problems were solved and no one even knew about it.
I have worked a lot with the receptionist, who isn't really the receptionist she is more like the office assistant to all the attorney's here. She has been giving me tons of tasks and little projects to do to keep me busy and make sure I don't sit in my chair all day long. I'm super thankful that she has had these tasks for me because this internship would be no fun if I had to sit in this office chair all day.
I took out a huge chunk of my LINK Project this week. I finished the criminal section and am beginning on the very large civil section. I have 6-7 types of pleadings out of 29. That's 29 different types in the Civil section alone! Considering that I first started my LINK Project on Monday I think I have made pretty good progress and I am confident that I will finish it by the end of next week.
