Model United Nations Project
This was a Model United Nations project. During this project we learned how the United Nations operates. We also learned about the Israel-Palestine Issue and the North Korean Nuclear Warhead issue. During this project I learned how resolutions are passed and how motions are made. For example: to set the amount of comments on a speech I would say "Motion to set the comment limit to 4 comments." The United Nations procedures can be tedious but if you push through it and get those procedures done, then resolutions will be passed and the Model United Nations meeting is a success.
Model UN Reflection
1) If a student asked me why the Model UN project was important I would say that the project is important because it lets you experience how the UN would actually work in real time. The United Nations make decisions that affect millions of people every day and getting an insight into how this decisions are made really puts the world problems you see on the news into perspective. During our exhibition I heard parents saying that it was extremely tedious and we were not actually debating the actual issue. What they may not have realized is that the United Nations actually works this way and in the long run these small details that seem tedious to some actually help to make a good decision in the long run.
2) I think during this project I used a lot of advocacy. Mostly during the exhibition, because I made a lot of comments, more than anyone else and I made clear what my point was on the subject. Especially during my speech which I enjoyed giving to the audience. When I felt that we needed to raise the comment limit to 4 comments instead of 2 I did so as soon I possibly could. Some people opposed this but in observing what was happening, 2 comments is not enough when 6 people would like to speak. In the end my motion to set the comment limit to 4 was passed by a majority vote. That is just one example of the advocacy that I used during this project and the exhibition.
3) During this project I found that writing resolutions policy papers was extremely difficult. This was because I had to stay in character and not let my personal views on what was happening influence what I wrote. When so much information was being put out in front of me it was difficult to keep my own opinions at bay while I wrote a policy paper stating what I thought Saudi Arabia should do and what resolutions it would possibly vote for according to what its allies thought. This project probably teaches you more about acting and keeping your opinions to yourself when you need to.
4) I found Jonathan Smiths speech to be interesting because he was advocating for his own resolution. It was fun to see him talk and support it. His speech was very good because he knew the most about the resolution which put him at an advantage and allowed him to clear up any questions that he had heard and also would allow him to let people know that he was open to countries amending the resolution so that they would vote for it. His understanding of the bill was great and I enjoyed the speech because he talked about in the way that it was supposed to be read or understood.
