Wow. This has been a great first week. There are always things to do and I get to help the attorney's out with their research. I organized bills, picked up the mail, and organized files. I have a great project to work on throughout my time here. I also have little research projects to do here and there along with occasionally answering the phone.
I learned a lot about researching. This is something that I already feel good at because of my time at Animas but researching laws or governing documents and making phone calls has really pushed me to look just a little bit deeper. It has also forced me to search in a different way because just Googling it isn't always the most effective way to find the information you need. I also learned a lot about how to answer the phone. The receptionist would sometimes have me take a call just for practice and that was something that I found a little nerve racking at first, but I got used to it pretty quick.
I worked with my mentor quite a bit as well as one of the attorney's, Lindsey. I completed a small research project for Lindsey. I am also working on a larger research project for my mentor, Jeff, because he needs more information about Superfund and the Superfund process. Along with that research project for Jeff I am working with Josh to build a database of documents that can be referenced and reused in future cases until the laws change.
The first couple days for the database-building project were a little rough. I didn't actually have any file to compile together and start creating the database. On Wednesday I met with Josh, one of the attorney's who was the one that actually started the database in the first place. He explained to me about what the documents meant and when they were used, the basics, so then I could have context to what I was organizing and what it would then be used for in the future. The research project that I had been working on was going great. I was getting a lot done and finding a lot of useful information about what I was being asked to look at.
For the upcoming week I would like to get a big chunk of my LINK project done (pretty obvious goal right there.) I am also planning on taking some time to study up on some organizations in the Southwest Colorado area because I am planning on going to a large hearing with my mentor next weekend.
